Don't Worry, Tipping Points

Give Lots of Warnings

....Oh, wait...

"Tipping points" always makes me think of avalanches.  Science shows there are many other cornices just waiting for their "points" to tip.

You know, kids, we have a great life!

Scientific American* published a short piece on October 14, 2026: “Earth’s ‘life support systems’ are breaking down…”

“Earth’s life-support systems are being pushed beyond stable limits, with changes unfolding faster than our ability to respond.”

The underlying paper is the 2026 update of the "State of the Climate" series, published in BioScience**

 - Seven of the 16 indicators are at record extremes:
  - Atmospheric concentrations of the main greenhouse gases (CO₂ ~428 ppm, methane, nitrous oxide).
  - Global ocean heat content.
  - Sea-level rise.
  - Mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet and worldwide glacier thickness.
  - Global warming appears to be **accelerating** (roughly doubling in rate )
  - Amazon rainforest dieback

Cartoon by Gemini.  303 word prompt.
Editorial cartoon, clean ink lines with flat muted colors, satirical and darkly funny.
A square living-room platform, about 30 by 30 feet, floats in the sky. It’s seen from slightly above, sitting in the lower third of the frame. It hangs from 9 vertical steel cables that run straight up out of the top of the frame: one at each corner, one at the middle of each side, and on the side nearest the viewer, two cables side by side about 2 feet apart at the midpoint. All the cables are fraying at roughly the same height, halfway between the platform and the top of the frame. Six are badly frayed with splayed, broken wire strands: four are down to about five intact strands, and two hang by a single thin strand. The other three are only slightly frayed.
The platform is furnished like a cozy suburban living room with no walls, the furniture arranged as if its edges were walls: a couch, a recliner, a coffee table, lamps, rugs, bookcases, and a large flat-screen TV standing at the far edge. A family is completely unaware of the danger. The mother and a 7-year-old girl sit on the couch watching TV, with a bloodhound lying on the floor at their feet, also watching. A 10-year-old boy stands wearing a VR headset. The father is asleep in the recliner, mouth open.
The TV shows a soft, vague image of a woman with long blond hair, with cheerful slanted text floating over TV: “Eat right!” “Exercise” “You are wonderful.”
Far below, about 2,500 feet down, is a devastated city: brown and gray ground, collapsed skyscrapers drawn as simple broken sticks, smoking ruins of houses, overturned cars and buses. The sky is pale blue at the top, fading to hazy white near the ground.
